Neuqua Valley Class of 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Named

The following NVHS Class of 2018 students have been named one of the approximately 4,000 candidates in the 2018 U.S. Presidential Scholars Program. The candidates were selected from nearly 3.5 million students expected to graduate from U.S. high schools in the year 2018. Inclusion in the U.S. Presidential Scholars Program, now in its 54th year, is one of the highest honors bestowed upon graduating high school seniors. Scholars are selected on the basis of superior academic and artistic achievements, leadership qualities, strong character, and involvement in community and school activities. The U.S. Presidential Scholars Program was established in 1964 by Executive Order of the President to recognize some of our nation’s most distinguished graduating seniors for their accomplishments in many areas: academic success, leadership, and service to school and community. It was expanded in 1979 to recognize students demonstrating exceptional scholarship and talent in the visual, creative, and performing arts. In 2015, the program was expanded once again to recognize students who demonstrate ability and accomplishment in career and technical fields. Annually, up to 161 U.S. Presidential Scholars are chosen from among that year’s senior class, representing excellence in education and the promise of greatness in America’s youth. A distinguished panel of educators will review these submissions and select 800 semifinalists in early April. The Commission on Presidential Scholars, a group of up to 32 eminent citizens appointed by the President, will select the finalists, and the U.S. Department of Education will announce the Scholars in May. Scholars will be invited to Washington, DC, for several days in June to receive the Presidential Scholars Medallion at a recognition ceremony and to participate in events and activities

Please join us in congratulating the following nominees: Kyri Chen, Yujia Chen, Connor Parnell, and Justin Zhao.

  • Specific reasons why students decide to eat or not to eat meals at school
  • Student perception of performance across key food, customer service, and dining environment attributes (such as taste and variety of food, line speed, and staff friendliness)
  • Students’ thoughts about making healthy choices and the most effective methods of communicating nutrition information to them

Billy Elton Neuqua Benefit Concert

Billy Elton is returning to Neuqua Valley for another benefit concert on Friday, March 9 at 7:30pm to benefit the memorial funds of three fondly remembered Neuqua teachers, Tom Schlegel, Dave Scheidecker, and Leslie Baumann! The band celebrates the music of Billy Joel and Elton John, and it features our own Reid Spears (music department) on piano and lead vocals, as well as two other music staff members, Ryan Rimington and Brad Pfeil. Over the course of the previous benefit concerts, the band has raised over $17,600 for the memorial funds. Tickets are $10 and are all general admission. Tickets are available through the Neuqua Music website at www.NeuquaMusic.org.

For those who haven't been to a Billy Elton show at Neuqua before, this is pretty much a flat out rock concert in the Neuqua auditorium. There is full professional lighting and sound, and even a projection screen that shows close-ups of the band and other video clips throughout the night. Feel free to check out the band's website at www.Billy-Elton.com and see their video demo for a bit of a preview.
Come out for a phenomenal show for a phenomenal cause!

Hoops for Heart - Neuqua Needs Your Help!

Neuqua Valley’s Physical Education department will be holding our annual Hoops for Heart fundraising event for the American Heart Association (AHA). Starting February 12th, students will be asked to participate in our online fundraising efforts to collect donations for the AHA. Please help by offering a few email addresses of family and friends in order to make this a success (see attachment).  With the amazing help from our students and families, last year we raised over $12,000 for the American Heart Association. On March 23rd, we will conclude with a fun Hoops for Heart day in which students will have the opportunity to participate in a variety of special activities including 3 on 3 basketball, volleyball, knockout contest, Pickleball, and swimming just to name a few.

All cash or check donations (payable to American Heart Association) can be given to your student’s PE teacher.  For a $10 or more donation, students can receive a “Hoops for Heart” t-shirt. If interested, students should bring their donation or show evidence of their online donations to their PE teacher to request a t-shirt.

Many individuals and families have benefited from the efforts of the American Heart Association in their fight again heart-related issues.  We ask that you consider the effects that heart disease has and will continue to have on our lives and do your part in making a difference.  We thank you all in advance for your continued help!
